# How to create a contractor estimate for a Canadian client

A useful estimate gives a client enough detail to compare the document with the work they discussed with you. 1. Describe the work before pricing it

Start with the project address and a short description of the result the client wants. Then list the work that delivers it: preparation, materials, labour, finishing, cleanup and any allowances. Give enough detail to separate included work from work that still needs a decision.

Example: Finish a 400 sq. ft. Toronto basement with framing, drywall, carpet, recessed lighting and a wet bar. State the measured wall area, selected finishes, and which electrical and plumbing tasks are included.

2. Identify the business, customer and project

3. Review the calculation line by line

For each item, check the quantity, unit and unit cost. Distinguish floor area from finished wall area: the sample has 400 sq. ft. of carpet and 800 sq. ft. of drywall. Those are different measurements, and each needs its own check on a real site.

4. Make allowances and limits easy to see
