Flooring quantity calculator: vinyl, tile and packs (US)

Calculate floor area, add a stated cutting allowance, then round up to complete packs. Keep installed area separate from purchased material when estimating vinyl plank, laminate or tile flooring in United States.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Calculate floor area, add a stated cutting allowance, then round up to complete packs. Keep installed area separate from purchased material when estimating vinyl plank, laminate or tile flooring in United States.

Measure the floor before choosing an allowance

Measure each rectangle in ft, multiply length by width, and add the areas. Split an L-shaped room into two non-overlapping rectangles. Include wardrobes or closets only when the new finish continues into them. Deduct fixed islands only when the floor will stop at their edges. A sketch with room names helps prevent missing a recess or counting the same strip twice.

Use one unit throughout the worksheet. For a mixed-unit supplier quote, convert the coverage figure before dividing. A pack labelled in square metres cannot be compared directly with a room measured in square feet. Record the original label as well as your converted figure so another person can check the order.

Calculate area and whole packs

The calculator below handles one rectangle plus additional measured room area. Its waste field is your assumption, not a product recommendation. The formula is order area = installed area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). Packs = round up(order area ÷ coverage per pack). The result also shows the extra material created by rounding.

Illustrative arithmetic: a 12 ft × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft. With a chosen 10% allowance, order area is 198 sq ft. At 22 sq ft per pack, nine packs provide exactly 198 sq ft. A different pack size or room layout changes the order.

Check layout and bulk orders

A percentage does not replace a layout plan. Diagonal laying, pattern repeats, plank direction, damaged pieces and narrow end cuts can change the usable yield. Confirm the cutting plan and manufacturer guidance for the selected product. Keep a separately agreed spare quantity if future repairs need a matching batch.

For a bulk flooring order, calculate each room first, then combine rooms that use the same product code, color and batch requirement. Do not round every room to a full pack when usable offcuts can be shared. Conversely, do not pool products with different sizes or finishes. Record delivery phases and storage space before assuming one delivery suits the whole job.

Turn the takeoff into a clear estimate

Price material against purchased quantity and installation against the agreed installed area. Add labor, removal, underlay, trims, transitions and subfloor preparation separately. Keep any floor repair allowance visible until the existing covering is lifted. The calculator estimates finish quantities only; it does not assess substrate condition or generate a current local market price.

Use the matching United States PDF example to see how measured scope becomes separate lines. Replace its fictional prices with supplier quotes and your own costs in USD. Record whether delivery, disposal and taxes are included in the final quote rather than treating an area result as a complete project price.

Common questions

How much LVP do I need?

Start with the measured installed area, apply the cutting allowance justified by your layout, and round up to the selected product’s pack coverage. LVP purchasing quantity and installer chargeable area can differ.

Can this calculate tile flooring?

Yes, for area and whole packs. Tile size, pattern, grout joints and breakage still need a product-specific layout. Adhesive and grout quantities require their own coverage data.
